North of the Merrimack

Start location: Pentucket Regional High School, 24 Main St.,  West Newbury, MA. Map to start

This ride features 39 miles along roads in Northern Essex County and New Hampshire that are part of the Charles River Wheelmen's Spring Century. The first 15 miles are the hillest.  The return is along several miles of the Merrimack River in the opposite direction.

Special ride instructions: Take a left out of the school driveway onto Rt. 113 and you will be on the CRW spring century route. The ride is marked with a white circle with the letter C in the middle and a white line indicating the direction of travel. You will cross the Rocks Village bridge shortly after beginning, and again just before the end of the ride. After the second crossing, quit following the spring century route marks, and instead retrace your route to the school by riding up bridge street and taking a right on Rt. 113 toward the school, following the similar North Shore Cyclists  Merrimack River Ride marks (without letter C in the circle).

Rocks Village Bridge construction:  This historic bridge is being reconstructed and has traffic lights at either end allowing cars to cross in one direction at a time. Please show courtesy to drivers.

For a beautiful and much flatter 21 mile ride, turn right after crossing the Rocks Village Bridge and stay right along the river following the NSC white circle and line marks for the Merrimack River Ride. Just before reaching the reconstruction of the Hines Bridge, turn left on Clarks Road (Birchwood), cross Rt. 110 and turn left on Rocky Hill Road to the Amesbury Riverwalk bike path. The bike path ends downtown in Amesbury. Take Main Street back to the river and follow CRW Spring Century marks river back across the Rocks Village Bridge and the NSC marks back to the start location at the school.
