This scenic ride leaves from the Hammatt Street Parking lot in Ipswich MA and goes north through Rowley and the Great Salt Marsh. Stop by Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats nature center, then continue on the bicycle lane out to Plum Island. Pay a couple of bucks at the gate to the Parker River National Wildlife refuge to ride on the scenic park road, then reverse after four miles at the Hellcat Observation tower. Follow your course back to Newburyport for lunch in this attractive city. From the river you can ride a couple of miles on the Clipper City Rail Trail before returning along the marsh and on nice wooded roads through Byfield. Back on Rt.1A at the Rowley / Ipswich town line we like to stop for ice cream at White Farms before heading back into town. This ride is part of the Road Scholar cycling tour of the Massachusetts North Shore and is led by Gordon Harris for North Shore Cyclists.
